Outstanding early 19th Century mahogany ‘flat-to-the-wall’ bow-front Stick Barometer, in essentially original condition; the ogee pediment over finely engraved silvered brass register plates, signed by the makers, and bearing the classic Ramsden wrap-around, solid-state, rack-and-pinion vernier mechanism.

The well patinated, figured mahogany trunk, inset with long Fahrenheit and Réaumur bow-fronted mercury thermometer, with original concealed offset cistern tube terminating within urn-shaped ebonised cistern cover.

Nathaniel Worthington and James Allan were both former apprentices of the world renowned Jesse Ramsden business. They acquired the highly successful firm from Matthew Berge in 1819, the partnership continuing until 1835, and the business thereafter under Worthington’s sole control until 1851.
