Outstanding late 18th Century inlaid mahogany Wheel Barometer in essentially original condition.
The unusual, elegantly shaped and finely patinated case, surmounted by swan-neck pediment and veneered in book-matched veneers, profusely strung in ‘rope-effect’ banding and inlaid with star and stylised fan paterae.
Inset with well engraved silvered brass Fahrenheit mercury thermometer behind unusual glazed hinged door and 8-inch diameter barometer dial, signed by the maker and protected by rare inlaid turned glazed wooden bezel. Cross-grained sides.
One of the foremost barometer engravers, Somalvico settled in Holborn around 1780 having emigrated from his native Italy. He collaborated with leading Holborn-based cabinet makers to create some of the very highest quality barometers.
This address, 87 Holborn, is his very earliest location, where he was active from c1780-87. His business thrived for over a hundred years thereafter.
