Excellent late 18th Century “flame” mahogany Stick Barometer in essentially original condition; the arched top with finely engraved silvered brass register plate, signed by the maker, bearing manually rack-and-pinion vernier and protected by lockable glazed door.
The trunk, veneered in strikingly figured and well-patinated Cuban mahogany, ebony banded and edge-moulded, concealing original barometer tube, which terminates within urn-shaped ebonised boxwood cistern cover.
Brother of John Cary, the renowned cartographer, William Cary, himself, achieved widespread acclaim as an instrument-maker. Operating from headquarters in The Strand from 1789 until his death in 1825, his firm was acquired by two of John’s sons, and thrived until 1890.
