A rare Henry VIII boarded elm, oak and polychrome-decorated chest, circa 1520-30.

With cross-hatched decoration throughout and superb dog-tooth profiled arched apron, traces of historic dark green paint throughout.

A comparable chest was discovered on the Mary Rose, Henry VIII's magnificent warship which sank at Spithead, off Portsmouth, in 1545. See Gardiner and Allen 'Before the Mast, Life and Death Aboard the Mary Rose' (2005) p. 397 (item no.81A4879). A further example is in Shakepeare's Birthplace Trust Collection, Stratford-upon-Avon, no.STRST.SBT1994-73.
