A mid-17th century chip-carved oak box, English/Welsh, circa 1650.

Profusely carved all over with geometric-filled roundels, the projecting base board with dog-tooth carving.

Literature: See Victor Chinnery 'Oak Furniture the British Tradition' (2016) pp.142-144 for comparable examples. The author notes that although some were carved by professional box makers, some were 'purchased in the plain state and then carved to serve as gifts', namely love tokens.
