A good and documented Charles I oak panel-back open armchair, West Country, circa 1630.
The tall back panel with skilled and well-designed stylised foliage topped by a carnation, the broad cresting with similar foliage, the back .uprights with unusul delicate incised meandering scrolls and punched flowerheads, lunette-carved seat rails, columnar-turned front supports. Excellent colour and patination.

The chair is illustrated Tobias Jellinek, 'Early British Chairs and Seats 1500 to 1700' (2009), p.60, pl.32 and described by the author as a 'fine armchair'.
