Elizabeth I joined oak and inlaid three-tier buffet or court cup-board, London or Exeter, circa 1580.
Having a boarded top with cushion-moulded and carved frieze, raised on bulbous cup-and-cover front supports, with palmette carving and ionic capital, the central shelf with original bog-oak and holly knot-pattern inlay, atop cushion-moulded, lenticular and leaf-carved rails (originally a drawer), on conforming front supports, the bottom tier with plain rails, the back uprights carved with stiff-leaves.
For a comparable three tier buffet, again with an inlaid middle tier shelf and two remaining shelves left plain, see the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (acc. no. W.69&:2, 3-1920). See also Ralph Edwards, 'The Dictionary of English Furniture' (1986), Vol. 11, p.181, fig.7, for a three tiered buffet in the collection of Christchurch, Oxford with an intact gadrooned and leaf-carved middle drawer.
