Chinese Export Underglaze Blue Armorial Porcelain Dish
Arms of Dalrymple of Hailes,
Motto- FIRME,
Circa 1775.

The Chinese export armorial underglaze blue and white dish of rectangular form with canted corners with a flower bouquet bound together with a silk bow and with a diaper border around the well with oval panels each painted with a flowerhead and a leaf to each side.  The wide rim center at the top with the coat of arms of William Dalrymple and the motto "Firme" above with, to each side, a large floral garland suspended from the rim.  The rim with a line of single diaper.

Reference: Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Volume II, David Sanctury Howard, Page 432, (R8).  The author discusses the family that this was made for the sixth son and that was William Dalrymple who served in the East India Company in Madras.  William died in 1777 and the service then returned to Scotland.

The Dalrymple family owned Newhailes House, which is located on the outskirts of Edinburgh overlooking Blackness Bay. The house was completed in 1721.  Parts of this service are displayed in the house.
