Chinese Export Porcelain Immortals Riding Mythical Beasts.

Circa 1770-85.

Rare & Important complete set of Chinese porcelain models of the Eight Immortals on the backs of mythical beasts. Zhang Guolao with double stalked bamboo on a black mule, Dongbin with a fly whisk on a green lion, Tieguai with a double gourd on a tiger, Zhongli Quan with a fan on a double-horned Kylin, Lan Caihe with a floral basket on a white elephant, Cao Guojiu with castanets on a white horse, Han Xaingzi with a flute on a sigle-horned "bixie", He Xiangu with a lotus flower on a deer grasping "lingzhi" fungus.

Dimensions: 7 1/2 inches- 8 3/4 inches x 8 inches wide.

A pair of similar immortals were sold at Christie's NY and sold for $20,000.0  with the hammer. (2019 | Live Auction 18151 The Tibor Collection: A Noble Eye for Chinese Export).

The Eight Immortals In Chinese mythology, the Eight Immortals were a legendary group of eight individual beings who had transcended the human state to become endowed with divine and supernatural attributes or powers.   Each immortal is endowed with a power that can give life or help their fight against evil.  Most of the Eight Immortals were born during either the Tang or Song dynasties and were venerated by Taoists and became popular in Chinese culture.  

The Eight Immortals were; He Xiangu, Cao Guojiu, Li Tieguai, Lan Caihe, Lü Dongbin, Han Xiangzi, Zhang Guolao, and Zhongli Quan.
