Chinese Export Porcelain Famille Rose Rococo Coolers,

After Marieberg Faience,

Circa 1765

The Chinese porcelain wine coolers are of rococo-form modeled after Marieberg faience with molded rocaillerie edged in feathered iron-red continuing to a pair of out scrolled iron-red handles enriched with gilt veining depicting "cracked ice" and flower heads

The wine coolers are painted with clusters of "famille rose" flowers grouping and a few scattered flowers can be found around the outside scalloped rim.  Around the foot is a continuous band of bamboo entwined with flowering plants.  The inner rim is painted in puce and gold with a gold rim and lower gold band and within a band of a scallop-shaped design in puce and white.  Below are a series of puce feathering.

Dimensions: Height: 7 inches x 11 inches wide x 7 1/2 inches deep

Reference: This model is based exactly upon a Marieberg faience original dating from 1760.  John Goldsmith Philips in his book "China Trade Porcelain" illustrates both the Mariaberg form and a Chinese Export example on page 158, fig 51 and page 77, plate 11.  and also see Michel Beurdeley, "Porcelain of the East India Companies," page 174, cat 110 for a Chinese Export example.

A similar pair at Christie's in January 2009, lot 65, made $18,750.00 for a pair.
