Chinese Export Armorial Porcelain Plate.
Arms of Stepney with Lloyd in Pretence.
Circa 1745-50.
The armorial plate is painted in famille rose enamels with a fine coat of arms of the Stepney family and made between 1745-50. The coat of arms fills the central which has a spearhead border. The rim has a crest at the top and scattered groupings of flowers alternating between small groupings and larger ones.
Dimensions: 9 inches diameter x 1 inch high.
Reference: Chinese Armorial Porcelain, David Sanctuary Howard, Vol. I, Page 487. The arms of Stepney, baronets, "Gules a fess chequy or and azure between three owls argent". Crest: " a talbot's hat erased gules in the mouth of a buck;s horn or" impaling " Argent a lion rampant sable", a coat borne by Lloyd of Crogen and Vaughan of Duddleston, Shropshire.
Sir Thomas Stepney, 6th Baronet, married Eleanor, daughter and heir of Thomas Lloyd and died in 1772. Howard suggests the service was made for this Stepney.
