Chinese Export Porcelain Blue and White Porcelain Plates,

After Maria Sybille Merian,

Circa 1740-45

A pair of blue and white plates with a design after Maria Sybille Merian, probably from the Pronk workshop. The Chinese export underglaze blue porcelain plates are decorated in underglaze blue with baroque scrolls highlighted in gold on the border with an image of flowers and tobacco plants in the central well, after an engraving by the famous Dutch botanist and artist Sybilla Merian.

Dimensions: 10 1/16 inches diameter x 1 1/8 inches high

The Royal Collection has a remarkable collection of Maria Sybille Merian's work, originally acquired in 1755 by George III, when Prince of Wales.
