Very well balanced WILLIAM III sterling silver trefid spoon with decorated rat tail.
Makers mark: TZ (crowned) possibly Thomas Issod. London 1695.
The front of the spoon is perfectly plain. The reverse of the bowl has a lace-back decoration on the rat tail.
The full set of hallmarks is stamped on the reverse of the stem and while the makers mark is very clear the other marks are slightly rubbed but legible.
The reverse of the finial has a scratch engraved T which is the owners initial. Initials are extremely important on early spoons as these spoons were generally carried around by the owner on journeys and made their spoon identifiable when eating surrounded by strangers.
This is a simple but elegant spoon with a well shaped bowl.
