Elegant Pair of George III Sterling Silver Boat Shaped Sugar and Cream Baskets with Swing Handles.

Makers: Peter And Ann Bateman. London 1791.

Both baskets stand on oval pedestal feet with a band of ribbing echoed on the rims and the handles. Each rim is engraved with a decorative bright cut horticulturally themed  band.  A contemporary family crest of an open-winged eagle facing right and gorged with a Duke's coronet is engraved on one end beneath the decorative band.
The full set of hallmarks, as well as the maker's mark are stamped very clearly on the reverse of each pedestal.  Both baskets have a lion passant stamped centrally on the front of the handles.
These items are particularly well made by Hester Bateman's son Peter in partnership with Ann Bateman his sister-in-law, wife of Jonathan. In general, due to inheritance and other reason pairs of baskets often became separated and therefore it is now difficult to find an original pair of baskets from the same set.

Height: Sugar Basket 3.5cm (8.9cm) with handle 7inches (17.8cm) - Cream Basket 3 inches (7.6cm) with handle 6 inches (15.2cm).
Width: Sugar Basket 4 inches (10.2cm) - Cream Basket 3.5 inches (8.9cm).
Length: Sugar Basket 6.5 inches (16.5cm) - Cream Basket 5.5 inches 14cm).
Weight: 13 troy ounces (404 grams) the pair.
