Interesting Victorian silver Scottish clan badge.

Circa 1890. Not hallmarked.

The front of the badge has the cut out crest of two laurel branches in orle for McArther or Macarthur. The crest is surrounded by a belt and buckle, which is the symbol of a clansman. The belt is engraved with the motto FIDE ET OPERA (By fidelity and labour). The reverse of the badge is plain, with a sturdy horizontal pin secured by a hook.

Individual clan badges were often produced in large numbers and it was very much the norm for them not to be hallmarked.
