Early 19th Century Burr Boxwood Nutcracker.

A good French early 19th century screw type nutcracker of traditional form in burr boxwood, which has a circular opening to receive the hazelnut. The screw section is made of plain boxwood, and is of an identical colour and patination. Eating hazelnuts was a popular pastime at functions and at theatrical performances. The whole has an excellent honey colour, grain and patination. Similar examples are illustrated in Treen for the Table by Jonathan Levi page 166.
