17th Century Chip Carved Ash Box.

An extensively chip carved late 17th century ash box, having a sliding lid, inscribed Anno and dated 1688. The box has a slightly convex form and is also extensively chip carved with intricate roundels and rope twist style corners, with a protruding base of similar form. Both sides are carved with the initials HOVT and one side has been replaced in oak and carved to match the original. The base has also been replaced and Victorian feet added, these we have now removed. We consider all this to have been done in the 19th century. The whole has a pleasing colour and retains a patination.

English Circa 1688.
