The box, made in the traditional manner, is rectangular in shape with canted corners. The engraving on the hinged lid has almost completely worn away through use and polishing. The scene, faintly visible, depicts a castle and two sailing boats, with indistinct wording to the top left corner. The two sides have simple engraved decoration and the underside has a fan in each corner, with a cartouche and cross in the centre. For its age and use it is in remarkably good condition, with no solder repairs. A small piece of the rim is missing, see images.
