An early 19th century boxwood pill silverer, having a fitted top, with a protruding band, to secure the removable lid. The whole, raised on a concave stem and stepped circular foot, has the remains of the silvering inside both sections, and has an excellent colour and patination.
These pill silverers were used by apothecaries, having made their pills, they would be moisturised with mucilage of acacia and then put in these containers with a silver leaf, gently rolling the pills within, which would coat them ready for storage in a bottle.
