An early 19th Century iron bar grate lark spit, having three pairs of prongs and two spears to impale five birds. This example can be adjusted up and down and held in position by a spring. It also revolves to cook the backs as well as the breasts of the birds. There is a circular revolving and adjustable open iron ring that would have held a brass bowl for catching the fat, so that the birds can be basted while being cooked.
