An extremely good initialled and dated knuckle bone apple corer, which were usually made by Prisoners of War and as mutton was the staple diet, bones were plentiful for making various items that they were allowed to sell on certain days in prison markets. The majority were plain, but the rarer ones, as in this instance were engraved and stained with different colours, mostly red, black and green. It has the initials M.D. and date of 1787 engraved in coloured red.
