The Remarkable Henry VIII Oak Great Hall Cupboard. Appleby Castle. Circa 1520.

This amazingly rare Tudor oak standing cupboard is of pentagonal form both to the upper section and stand. The upper section with a well patinated top above a deep fine knull carved cornice. The deeply panelled front with carved stylised serpents and foliate scrolls, the magnificent central door carved in full relief with a portrait head within a rope twist roundel, flanked by serpent and foliate scroll carving.

The framework to the upper section carved with guilloche decoration.
The stand again of pentagonal form with a deeply panelled back with four boldly turned front supports, again the framework carved with the same guilloche type carving. A very well patination pot shelf below united by stretchers. Wonderful colour and patination.

Note - very occasionally a single Henry VIII oak portrait panel carved in full relief will appear on the market and make a considerable sum, this is even rarer example complete with its original structure, the rope twist roundel and guilloche carving may indicate that this cupboard was made in a West Country workshop (Devon / Somerset)

Provenance: Appleby Castle Great Hall. Once the seat of Lady Anne Clifford.
