A rare mid-17th century oak 'layette' basket, circa 1660.
Of boarded construction, carved and pierced all over with a scrolling foliate floral design, the interior with 'love-bird' motif.
Generally referred to as 'layette' baskets, for presenting or displaying new-born baby clothes and linens, baskets such as this may equally have been given as bethrothal or wedding gifts, or used at weddings to hold favours, posies or even gloves. The 'love-bird' design on this example would support its use in this way.
