Rare carved Pedestal salt in Coquilla Nut.

Extremely rare late C18th salt in the fashion of an Italian classical urn. Each end of the oblong opening is a handle supporting a recumbent lion. The bowl of the salt is exceptionally carved with flower garland swags. The rim and pedestal also beautifully carved with various carving. A section has been let in originally before being carved where one of the holes of the nut would be. This does not detract from the piece in any way and only mentioned for accuracy. Wonderful warm colour and patination. Circa 1780-90.

Note: most likely Italian in origin this piece is much more sophisticated than the usual English treen salts we see.
