Torres after Jacques Rigaud
A Prospect of St. James's Park
16 x 10 inches
Etching in original hand colour by Torres after Rigaud and published in London by Laurie and Whittle in 1794.
This panoramic view of London, taken from outside Buckingham House looking down The Mall, offers us a wonderful perspective of the full extent of the city at the end of the C18th. The foreground is fascinating for its detail and its depiction of the bon ton enjoying the fountains and gardens of St. James's Park but it is in the background that we learn so much more. The city is spread out from Westminster Abbey in the east through to St. George's, Hanover Square in the west. In the middle of it all lies the majestic dome of Wren's masterpiece, St. Paul's Cathedral, dominating the skyline above a curve in the Thames.
It is interesting to note that the text on this print is in both English and French. This is no accident but was done for commercial reasons so engravings could be sold in both London and Paris.
