Piero Fornasetti Framed Set of Coasters.

"12 Mesi, 12 Soli" design,
Early 1960s.

The six large ceramic coasters are from the "12 Mesi, 12 Soli" design.  These are named "Soli Di" on the reverse with some numbered for the month.

They each depict in color, the sun in different manifestations - in a sea shell x 2, with a straw hat, lurking under the sea as a fish, and as a bottle of new wine, etc.

Kieron Marchese wrote "Celestial themes featured heavily in Italian designer Piero Fornasetti’s work and the sun in particular has occupied a privileged position in his repertoire of natural forms.

In the early 1940s, he designed a series of almanacs for the architect Gio Ponti, who encouraged the then-young artist to experiment with his artworks on furniture.

This ultimately led to Fornasetti’s lithographically printed Sole chair, which featured a sunray face on the wooden back and seat.

Many subjects inspired Fornasetti, from butterflies to buildings, but by far the most enduring is the sun."

Mark: a hand holding a paint brush painting a sun, "Soli Di" printed in black and FORNASETTI. MILANO/ Made in Italy.
