Rare and fine pair of Chinese export porcelain handled hexagonal sauce tureens and stands decorated in opaque enamels from the famille rose (fencai) palette with figures within reserves in a gilt floral scroll ground, domed cover surmounted by a pomegranate ground, c. 1770, Qianlong reign, Qing dynasty, d. of stand: 21 cm, 8¼ in. 4-17232

Illustrated: Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art, by A. Varela Santos, 2018/2019, cat. 65.

Provenance: Forbeses of Pitsligo, Edinburgh, tastemakers rooted in 18th-century Edinburgh, Scotland, U.K.

Possibly acquired by John Wishart Belsches, later Sir John Stuart (1752-1821) or one of his parents either William Belsches of Tofts, Berwick and Fort St. David’s, Madras (1717-1753) or Emilia Stuart Belsches of Fettercairn (1730-1807) apparently at Greenhill House, Edinburgh by 1820 and from 1821 at Fettercairn.

These tureens are certainly those referred to in a list of Chinese porcelain at Greenhill House, Edinburgh that was sent to Fettercairn House. The document is dated 1st of August, 1820 and apparently compiled by Sir William Forbes, 7th Bt. (1773-1828). He refers to “2 small fine old China bowls w/covers”.

William Belsches of Tofts, Berwick and Fort St. David’s, Madras (1717-1753),或是母親Emilia Stuart Belsches of Fettercairn (1730-1807)1820年前她一直在愛丁堡的Greenhill House1821 后則在菲特凱恩。
