Hunt & Roskell Victorian Silver Gilt Chased Mug. London 1848

Very attractive Victorian silver gilt mug decorated with hop vine on a matted ground. The handle is fashioned as a vine branch.
Maker: John S Hunt of Hunt & Roskell.  London 1848.

On the opposite side to the handle on the body of the mug is a small shield which is vacant.
The makers mark and the full set of hallmarks are clearly stamped just below the lip on the right hand side of the handle. The base of the mug is stamped HUNT & ROSKELL LATE STORR MORTIMER & HUNT. A large number of these mugs were made and the figure 3465 on the base is indicative of this but their popularity has not waned.

On the death of Paul Storr in 1838, his business (Storr & Mortimer) was continued by his nephew John Samuel Hunt under the name of Mortimer & Hunt. In 1843 the company became Hunt & Roskell until 1897.
Paul Storr entered into business with Rundell, Bridge & Rundell in 1807 who were the Royal Goldsmiths at the time. John Hunt followed in Storrs footsteps and the company Hunt & Roskell was listed in 1843 as Silversmith and Jewellers to Queen Victoria. Due to the Queens extended European family, they became the most important suppliers to the affluent society around the world.
