Huge Royal South Pacific Kava Bowl.

Late 19th Century/Early 20th Century.

The bowl was used for the preparation of Kava and is of typical form with pierced carrying lug and four legs. It is however particularly large as befits a gift from a King.

Kava was a mildly intoxicating drink the preparation of which involved elaborate ritualistic procedure when used in formal ceremonies where it played an important part.

Provenance:
Given to the previous owner as a gift by King Taufa'ahau IV of Tonga.
