John Clark after Lieutenant Downman

Genuine Bang Up!

28 x 21 inches

An etching and aquatint with original hand colour; engraved by John Clark after Downman and published in London in 1812.

A charming coaching print from Regency England where a coach and four is about to take a sharp turn in the road. There appear to be more people atop the carriage than inside. The coachman is accompanied by two gentlemen and a horn blower all sitting on top of the roof whilst inside all we can see are one man and his dog. The anonymity of the image almost suggests it could be sold, annotated and adapted for local interest; there are no inscriptions on the coach panels where we would expect to see them and no directions on the signpost.
