To the base of the painting is written in gilt ‘Ego dormio, et cor meum Vigilat’ which translates as ‘I sleep but my heart is awake’ a reference to the Song of Solomon 5:2. French, mid 17th century. Measures 27.2 x 21.8cm including frame.
