First Period Worcester Hop Trellis Porcelain Teapot and Cover.

Circa 1778-82.

The First Period Worcester porcelain teapot and cover have a lobed French shape and is decorated with a variation of the "Hop Trellis" pattern. The shape of the body and the ear-shaped handle is from the Sèvres. The pattern is closer to the French than other variations with a less dense design with alternating painting of a trellis and Hops on each distinct lobe.

Around the base and rim is a mazarine blue band with gilt designs enhancing the lobes as if they were columns.  The spout is highlighted simply in gold with scattered flowers and a shaped flaring gilded base to it.  The handle has a blue line down the center and gilt one to each side. There is a gilt dentil rim and the finial on the cover is in the form of gilded flower head with two gold leaf terminals.

Dimensions: 4 3/4 inches high x 7 5/8 inches wide x 4 1/4 inches deep.

Condition: Excellent.

An example of the "Hop Trellis" pattern is on display at the V & A Museum, London. (https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O184724/hop-trellis-teapot-and-cover-worcester-porcelain-factory/).

Reference: Worcester Porcelain, 1751-1790, The Zorensky Collection, Simon Spero and John Sandon, Page 301, #372 for a plate in this pattern.  The authors state that this variation is closer to the Sèvres than most variations.
