Fine Mongolian Carpet.
4.04 x 2.76 m.
Though very few antique examples have survived, the tradition of Mongolian carpet weaving goes back many centuries, inspired in part by the designs of Chinese textiles, borrowing certain characteristic designs, including images of tigers, Buddhist motifs, and infinite knots, though set apart by their more dynamic, creative use of colour, and the exceedingly high quality of their wool.
This fine carpet dates to the 1930s, and features a dragon design – often associated with water, thunder, and the power of nature – over a soft, ivory ground, and framed by a wide, decorative border. Despite coming from the early 20th century, it feels surprisingly modern, with a balanced, open composition.
This example is in excellent condition with a soft, lustrous wool.
A unique and rare piece, to complement a tasteful interior.
