Rare Large 19th Century Bibikabad Carpet, Signed.

6.52 x 3.90 m.

Bibikabad weavings come from a similar region of North West Persia to Malayer carpets, and while closely related in many ways, are well known for their superior craftsmanship and tight weaves. Their designs combine the grand scales of sophisticated workshop pieces and the creative spontaneity of tribal and village weavings.

This early example, dated to c. 1870, features an unusual muted ocean blue field with a grey undertone, overlayed with vegetal motifs in saffron tones with turquoise accents; a restrained, well-balanced palette, all in rich, gracefully aged vegetable dyes, and framed by an ochre-tone border of notably generous proportions. The artist had employed an all-over design, rather than the conventional central medallion, and a charming naivety in the border. There is wonderful clarity in the drawing, owing to the high quality of the weave and the lustrous hand-spun wool.

Bibikabad carpets were usually made in a much smaller size than this example - the signature on this unusually large carpet reads 'By Order Of', indicating that this was likely a commission for a member of the nobility.

A rare find, especially given its impressive size, retained in good practical condition, though with some age-related restoration, finished to a high standard. It still retains its outer borders on all sides, and the organic dyes used in its construction have taken on a wonderful patina.

This piece is an exceptional example of its type, in a truly impressive format, with a quiet formality which would lend itself well to any setting.
