19th Century Azerbaijani Runner.

4.90 x 1.10 metres.

Azerbaijan has a rich history of rug weaving going back several centuries. Due to its geographic location, it stands at the crossroads of various cultures, and its carpets reflect this in their richness and beauty. As such, these pieces are highly sought-after, well-known for their wide range of designs and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours.

This fine 19th Century Azerbaijani runner boasts a subtle all-over design – where most weavings of this type repeat the pattern in the central field in only one colour, this example employs a wide palette, with its warm madder field serving as an attractive backdrop to an array of organic-dyed tones including sage green, soft blues, ochre yellows and ivory. Being an earlier piece, it has a fine weave and high-grade hand-spun wool, lending a crisp clarity to its drawing.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its outer borders preserved on all sides.

A refined, characterful tribal weaving, which would feel at home in a wide variety of interiors.
