This very fine Tankard has straight, slightly tapering, sides decorated with two wide horizontal coopered bands. The plain scroll handle is attached to the flat cover with an unusual pierced fan shaped thumb piece.

The top of the cover has a serpentine shaped front and bright cut edge. Most unusually the cover is engraved with a contemporary Jockey, in his colours, on what must have been his winning horse, all in a rural landscape.

The Tankard is fully marked on the side of the main body and with the Duty Mark, Town mark and date latter on the inside of the cover. The Tankard is in very fine condition and is of a very heavy weight.

Although Tankard were given as racing prizes, it is very rare to find the winner and horse portrayed in an engraved cover. This is an extremely rare, desirable, piece which displays some of the finest engraving we have seen on a piece of silver.

Dimensions
