English stoneware white salt-glazed bear baiting jug.
Dated: 1750 Staffordshire or possibly Nottingham.
An English white salt-glazed stoneware Bear Jug with removable cover. The jug is naturistically modeled with shredded clay fur technically known as "grog" enhanced with brown markings; the bear has brown button-shaped eyes and holds a stylized dog with a scroll-shaped tail between paws.
The jug is of an unusual form standing on four legs; most similar bear jugs are made in a sitting position.
Dimensions: 10.5 inches high.
Current Condition: Professionally restored at a crack at the collar.
