English Creamware Pottery Cat,
Late 18th Century
The large whimsical cat with brown and iron-red sponging sits on its hind quarters on an oval base with blue sponging with a bemused expression on its face.

Reference: The Henry H. Weldon Collection: English Pottery, 1650-1800, Leslie B. Grigsby, Page 338, #193 for a pearlware lion of very similar form. This lion is related to earlier Staffordshire figures made in saltglaze and lead-glazed earthenware examples of which can be seen in the Burnap and Earle Collection.
