Elegantly simple, mid-18th Century Cuban mahogany Stick Barometer in excellent original condition. The arched top over well-engraved, silvered brass register plates. The edge-moulded trunk, of solid mahogany, with exposed cistern tube terminating within writhen-turned cistern cover, which, together with the sickle shaped register pointer and use of the word ‘Variable’ rather than ‘Change’ are typical of the 1730-40 period.
Scarlett was one of the leading Instrument-Makers of his day, achieving international acclaim and securing the Royal Warrant from King George II. He worked, on his own account, from premises in Macclesfield St. Soho, from 1700 until his death in 1743. A similar barometer is illustrated in Banfield: Plate 44.
