Doulton Faience Shaped Botanical Pottery Vase,
Aesthetic Movement,
Signed by Artist Mary M Arding,
Early 1880s.
The unusually shaped molded vase with a flared foot has a reverse pear shape with a similarly shaped aqua-colored panels with flowers to each side.
On one side is a dark brown ground with yellow daffodils growing from the bottom right. On the reverse side is a branch of white Cherry Blossom flowers hanging from the top.
The surrounding ground is a light ochre color with bands of brown. The interior of the flared neck in aqua too. The sides have an arts and craft panel imitating stained glass.
Dimensions: 13 inches x 8 inches x 3 1/4 inches
Marks: Circular printed mark with Lambeth/ Doulton/ Faience and four interlocking D's; Also, MMA/1171 and 553.
Provenance: Private New York Collector, Paper Label for Whitley Collection.
MMA for renowned artist Mary M Arding and dating from around 1884.
