A Good Quality Late 19th Century Oriental Hardwood
Opium Coffee Table Having Well Figured Panelled Top
With Attractive Pierced & Carved Frieze Flanked By
Curved End Supports

(Often referred to as opium tables due to the similarity in
design to similar tables used in their home country for the
locals to sit on the floor around and smoke their opium
these types of coffee tables were produced around the
end of the 19th century in China specifically to be shipped
to the western markets. These days they serve a purpose
that very few other types of genuinely antique furniture can,
in that they are usually the right height to be used as a coffee
table in modern interiors. Also the fact they are constructed
from an extremely dense and hard wearing oriental hardwood
means that they are not easily damaged by spilt, or hot, drinks)
