19th Century Beshir Carpet.
3.46 x 4.65 m.
A stylish Beshir carpet dating circa 1890s with a creative drawing. The pomegranate pattern is inspired by earlier weavings of the 18th century that symbolises prosperity, longevity and fertility. The central field is framed by over a dozen artistically woven borders.
Antique Beshir rugs, woven by the Beshir tribe of Turkmenistan in Central Asia, have a distinctive weaving style in a region where most rugs can be recognised by their so-called elephant foot patterns and deep blue and red colours.
The design is created with a precision that is not always found in this type of weaving, making this piece truly a one-of-a-kind for its incredible craftsmanship. The muted aubergine/grey colour field and harmonious variety of earthy, natural-dyed colours have gracefully aged.
This Beshir carpet is in very good condition for everyday use. It still retains the original dozen borders on all sides, together with original fringes – a remarkable feature for a rug of this age.
An exquisite piece that has an earthy feel in both colour and design. A wonderful addition to formal settings, as well as a charming, tribal touch to any room. A unique example of its type and rare in this large format.
