18th century Welsh Oak Coffor-Bach - Welsh marriage or dowry chest. Circa 1740. The hinged lid with a moulded edge over a front of three square fielded panels. Wooden inlaid key hole. A single drawer with brass pear drop handles. Bracket feet and a moulded edge above on three sides. Lovely mellow colour and good patination.
In Wales they were frequently given as a wedding present or love token and sometimes inlaid or carved with the recipients’ initials, dates and designs of flowers and birds. They could be seen as the equivalent of a bride’s bottom drawer or part of her dowry. On occasions they held linen.
