18th Century Turned Lignum Vitae Pounce Pot.
ENGLAND, CIRCA 1770
An 18th century turned lignum vitae pounce pot. The hollow body of bulbous form supporting the perforated, saucer-shaped dish decorated with concentric rings and with a screw thread. Raised on a hollow, spreading foot decorated with concentric rings and with a screw thread. It is unusual to find an example with a base designed to store further pounce.
Pounce pots of this form were used so that the perforated, saucer-shaped top could catch any unused pounce, which was then returned to the pot.
