Unusual sterling silver Presentation Trowel for Milton Mount College 1925.

The top of the plain trowel is engraved with the motto ORA ET LABORA followed below by a maple leaf on which is engraved W.H.P. Beneath, a ribbon engraved with MILTON MOUNT COLLEGE. JULY 4TH 1925.
The applied handle is decoratively encased by delicate  silver lattice-work.

The full set of hallmarks are clearly stamped at the top of the trowel on the left hand side of the handle and  overlapping the base of the handle and are extremely crisp.

This is a very interesting piece. Milton Mount College was founded in Kent in 1871 for the education of daughters of Congregational Ministers. The College moved to Worth Park near Crawley in 1920 and is now called Milton Mount Gardens which is a much used park with a lake.

Omar Ramsden was a Sheffield born silversmith, (1873 - 1939). He had a very distinctive style and in 1913 was listed as an artist.  His work is much collected to-day. He was one of Englands leading early 20th Century designers and makers of silverware.
To-day, this trowel would make a very elegant slice for cake or pie.

Length: 7.5 inches (19.05 cm)

Weight: 2.56 Troy Ounces (79.62 grams)
