A superb James I oak chest with a triple moulded edge top held by its original strap hinges above a top rial deeply carved with lunettes and incorporating the initials EP.

The front has three arcaded panels, again deeply carved, and with applied panels behind which are scratch carved with foliate designs incorporating the date 1620.

At the base is a side hung drawer deeply carved with lunettes and other designs. The carving is of superb quality and suggests a West Country origin.

It is interesting to compare the carving to the that on the integral wall cupboards on the stairs of the Merchant's House in Marlborough as illustrated on the inside back cover of Victor Chinnery's book "Oak Furniture The British Tradition".

The sides and back are panelled and the chest has excellent untouched colour and patination throughout.
