Very rare GEORGE III Exeter shilling token.
Maker: Joseph Hicks. Circa 1811.
By 1811 the shortage of small change in the United Kingdom had become evermore acute and the public was forced to use monetary tokens issued by banks but also by affluent merchants.
Tokens issued from 1811 to 1814 of high quality are now difficult to find because they were overly used.
Following the great recoinage of 1816 these tokens were taken out of circulation.
