York Minster: An important Edward III monumental, carved oak roof boss from the South Transept vault, circa 1360.

From the intersection of the rib with the wall plate, boldly carved with hawthorn, including leaves, flower and branches, with vermillion and gilt decoration, mounted on a custom-made metal stand, height without the stand 46.4cm.

Provenance: York Minster, South Transept, recovered after the disastrous fire of 1984. See 'The Fires of York Minster: From AD 741 to 9 July 1984', p.19 for a photograph showing the collapsed vault, with two similar roof bosses visible amongst the timbers.
