For sale is this rare art nouveau sterling silver photo frame. Marked for Goldsmiths and Silversmith, London 1901, it was made by William Hutton & Sons and designed by their London Studio made famous by Kate Harris.
For an example (re-backed) marked for William Hutton see this link. The design is very unusual with the trunks or branches of what I think are plum trees protruding from the sides of the frame. The design is very much in the style of Kate Harris and the “New Sculpture” movement from which Harris and many other of the women designers of this period came.
The silver work on the frame is in excellent original condition. The back of this frame is also entirely original in green velvet and silk. The back is showing its age but still totally useable. The A frame support is solid and working but slightly off centre.
Kate Harris was employed by the London studio of William Hutton & Sons to produce artistic silver from 1899 to c 1905. Harris was one of the very few women, or British exhibitors, to win recognition at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition. At the Paris Exhibition all her and Hutton’s work was displayed on the stand of the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths company. This frame may be by Harris.
