BADA Gift List - Under £1000A white parian ware ceramic tankard, Charles Meigh, English circa 1846.
Mug of smear-glazed stoneware and moulded in relief and decorated with applied figures of revelling bacchanals. The body is almost cylindrical and with a loop handle in the form of a vine stem. Circular foot. Based on the 'Bacchanalian Revel before a Herm of Pan' by Nicholas Poussin, and the reverse shows a scene taken from 'Drunken Silenus' by Peter Paul Rubens.
Underside shows A medallion enclosing two classical heads and surrounded by 'Arts and Commerce Promoted : The Society of Arts' Medal Presented to Charles Meigh for the best model of a Mug ornamented in relief' (Printed in brown)
